Jakob Koranyi

Swedish cellist Jakob Koranyi is a ‘force to be reckoned with’ (The Strad), who has firmly established himself as one of Europe’s most interesting soloists. Acclaimed for his commanding virtuosity, delicate sound, and passion for diverse and innovative programming, Koranyi has toured Europe and North America extensively – but, due to the extreme negative impact of aviation on our world, has chosen to opt-out of air travel until a sustainable alternative is found.

Jakob Koranyi’s orchestral highlights include performances with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, The Hallé, Flanders Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris,  Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Residentie Orkest, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Weimar Staatskapelle, Grand Rapids Symphony, Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony, Arctic Philharmonic, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, Filharmonia Veneta, and with the Gothenburg, Gävle, Malmö, Helsingborg and Norrköping Symphony Orchestras. He collaborates with distinguished conductors including Lionel Bringuier, Tabita Berglund, Jonathon Heyward, Jaime Martin, Marc Soustrot, Joana Carneiro, Okku Kamu, Eiji Oue, Michael Francis, Krzysztof Urbański, Yordan Kamdzhalov, Stefan Solyom, Thomas Söndergaard and Christian Lindberg.

Also a keen chamber musician, Jakob Koranyi has enjoyed numerous re-invitations to the Verbier Festival, Schloss Elmau, the Amsterdam Cello Biennale, International Chamber Music Festival in Stavanger, Delft Chamber Music Festival, Martin Fröst’s Vinterfest, Festivalalta in Norway, the Festival Piano Biennale in The Netherlands, Rovigo Cello City Festival, Cleveland Chamber Festival, Kempten Festival, , Zutphen Cello Festival, Peamarsh Chamber Music Festival, Danish String Quartet Festival, and the Båstad and Gotland Chamber Music festivals. He has also given over a decade of successful performances with the prestigious Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center in New York.

Jakob Koranyi carries a wide repertoire that ranges from the Bach suites to new compositions. He performed the world premieres of Julia Wolfe’s cello concerto at the Amsterdam Cello Biennale; Schnelzer’s ‘Crazy Diamond’ Concerto; Andrea Tarrodi’s ‘Highland Concerto and Djuro Zivkovic’s double concerto.

Koranyi was a Rising Star of the European Concert Hall Organization, and was awarded the Nordic Soloist Prize. An earlier recipient of awards from international festivals and foundations including Le Prix d’Honneur and Ferminich Prizes from the Verbier Festival, Koranyi received the 2nd Grand Prix at the Rostropovich Competition in Paris, in 2009. While still a student, he also won first prizes in all national music competitions in Sweden – most notably the Soloist Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Sixten Gemzéus Prize.

Jakob Koranyi plays on a Joseph Gratiani cello built 1756 in Genoa.
